Killing Floor — Steamland

Platform: PC |Engine: Unreal |Release Date: May 14, 2009

Software Used: Modo, 3DS Max, Photoshop, Unreal 2.5

These are environment props I created for the Killing Floor Summer Side Show level Lockheart's SteamLand. It was a very fun map to work on because I concept sketched the assets we needed in a Steampunk style. This gave me a chance to be really creative!

In keeping with the Steampunk style, I added as many odd looking gears, bolts, and twisted pipes as possible. The older engine limited me a lot in poly-count and I could not use normal maps, so I made the diffuse textures as interesting as I could, often going for a rusted grungy metal look.

I also set up all these props so that they could animate. Lots of moving parts and rotating gears gave things a Steampunk feel.  The gears on the signs turned at varying speeds and directions. The tops of the large industrial towers also turned. And of course, the Caroushell turned, along with the snails moving up and down! The Steampunk Fountain I made for the center of the courtyard spit out black oil.
