Operation: Harsh Doorstop - Modular/Destructible Buildings

Platform:PC |Engine: Unreal Editor 4 |Release Date: May 1, 2020

Software Used: 3DS Max, Photoshop, Quixel Suite, Unreal Editor 4

These are examples of fully destructible modular buildings that I made for the game Operation: Harsh Doorstop. I was tasked with creating my own system of modular destructibility that could be implemented across a number of building types (concrete, wood, stone, etc.) I had a lot of previous experience making modular buildings for Killing Floor 2, yet those buildings were not destructible. After some experimentation, I created a system where pieces fit together perfectly like a puzzle that hides the damaged edges. When a modular section of a building is hit by an explosive weapon such as an RPG, that piece swaps to a damaged variant. As the walls and floors are blown away, a support skeleton that is non-destructible is revealed. The skeleton is typically made out of large steel girder beams for industrial buildings, or wood for houses. The system was a huge success and allowed us to have buildings that can be blown apart wall by wall, and floor by floor. This is very uncommon in FPS games.
