Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad — Fallen Fighters

Platform: PC |Engine: Unreal |Release Date: September 13, 2011

Software Used: 3DS Max, Photoshop, DDO, Unreal 3

These are buildings and environment props I created for the Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad level Fallen Fighters. This level is set in Volgograd, Russia, at the scene of the famous Battle of Stalingrad. The buildings in this area are huge in scale, and making them was a massive undertaking. For these buildings, I had very old black and white pre-World War II photographs as reference. I opted not to show the reference here, but if you're interested in seeing it please contact me.

Each building was created by using BSP mesh the level designers made then modeling over it in 3DS Max to achieve the desired scale. I then used high resolution tiling textures for the walls. Individual building detail was what really set them apart. For that, I unwrapped custom dressing pieces that snapped onto the large structures. These pieces were used for all unique details like trim, window frames, balconies, signs, etc.  To add to the winter feel, I added snow to every building ledge.

The final step was to destroy the buildings by breaking them up with the cut tool and then using vertex paint in Unreal on the broken parts. I also made custom destructible props like the flag monument that can be blown apart into seperate chunks.
